While Richard Morris was serving a life sentence, his wife reached out to retain our services in hopes of effectuating his release, though, she was weary about the whole process. Mr. Morris also had his own set of worries but we walked them both through it, maintained contact and kept them updated throughout the legal processes. We wrote a Pre-Parole Packet for Mr. Morris which lead to his release after 30 years in prison, living his best life united with his wife, working as a fitness trainer.
The National Paralegal Center engages in activism for the incarcerated populations as a whole. Peabody award winning journalist, Hilary Harper Andersson, reached out to us for our activist work in production of a BBC documentary which addresses the racism and brutality that incarcerated individuals endure at the hands of correctional officers.
Pictured here is Hilary Andersson interviewing Attorney David Jarashow who have worked with on several occasions, successfully litigating on the behalf of prisoners who were brutality beaten by correctional officers.
Attorney Durann Neil Jr. commissioned The National Paralegal Center to write the Appellate Brief for Ms. Dorff who was serving a sentence in state prison for selling drugs that led to the death of county sheriff’s son. This case garnered a lot of media attention. We wrote the appellate that was submitted to the Appellate Court. The brief was effective and the court was forced to overturn Ms. Dorff's conviction.
Mr. Hathaway was severely brutalized by correctional officers who yanked patches out his beard, yelled racial slurs, stomped him, damaged his eyes, and then attempted to justify their brutality by accusing him of false charges. We, first, succeeded in having the false charges against Mr. Hathaway dismissed with an appeal, and then, filed a civil suit against DOC and the involved correctional officers. The suit was successful and the case was settled for an undisclosed amount. Mr. Hathaway is currently working and fathering his 1 year old son.
Pictured here (left) with his foot atop all the discovery we had to read through for his case, is client Oscar Dejesus. His mother contacted The National Paralegal Center on his behalf after he was found guilty of a Robbery charge he did not commit and sentenced to 17 years in prison.
We assisted Mr. Dejesus thereafter his conviction was overturned and remanded back to the court for a second trial. Back in court, we assisted Mr. Dejesus in filing pretrial motions and prepared for trial. Mr. Dejesus was found not guilty and is home free living with his mother and employed as a construction laborer. We are currently assisting his in filing a civil complaint for malicious prosecution.
Pictured here (above) is client Mr. Vince Jackson holding the actual legal motion we filed on his behalf for his medical issues that conflicted with COVID-19. After the motion was granted, he was released on the ankle monitoring bracelet and completed the remainder of his sentence at home where he could better remedy his medical needs.
